The meeting on Thursday 6th January has been POSTPONED.
The committee met this evening (via Zoom), and felt that the Covid situation was too serious for us to go ahead with what was to be a hands on, close contact occasion. In its place will be an interactive online meeting broadcast via Zoom. Members should have received a link via email today. Anyone not on our contacts list is welcome to join us on Zoom for the meeting: contact info@ryedalewoodturners.org.uk for the link. It will start at 7:30 pm and Steve Fearnley will be looking at turning eggs, making beeswax paste and containers to hold it in, a new Razertip pyrography machine that Santa brought him, and a look at some of the woodturning blanks we now have in stock for the club. John Whiteley tells me the wood blanks for sale in York have now all gone - courtesy of Durham woodturners (probably Wear Valley Woodturners) buying up all that was left. I do have about £200 worth of these wood blanks which I will bring to the next meeting, for sale at very reasonable prices (less than half current value). All will be labelled with current market value, cost to club members, and some notes about the timber. A list of bowl blanks and a list of spindle blanks is available on the site. If you cannot wait, feel free to visit me in Thornton le Dale and browse. Just email first. There is also some 3" oak from which I will be preparing blanks for sale.
It is encouraging to see 10 members have already paid their £25 subscription via bank transfer, despite the first live meeting being cancelled. Many thanks. Our club might have a future yet, despite these difficult times!
Keith will be explaining how he made this chess set, how to turn multiple pieces to the same size and shape, and turning at least one chess piece as an example on the night. There will also be wood blanks for sale, issue of new membership cards and programmes, an update on the Scampston chestnut project, and the latest of John's "Chairman's challenges".
Apologies from Martyn to the six members who tried to Zoom in. The village Hall had changed its Wifi provider and it took him some time to find the new settings. This then put him on the back foot, and he couldn't get the live stream to come through to those of us at home. The last time he did this was October last year: we are still learning. We will have a dry run before the next meeting.
On the positive side it was good to see all the exotic wood blanks sold, and most of the oak. Also good to welcome new members - sorry it was not what we had advertised or planned! Membership is up to 40, with at least a couple more to come.

Posted 20 April 2022. A couple of additions to our online gallery, sent in by John Kershaw. This one is a fluted oak bowl, turned and then carved with a small chisel.

Eight club members gathered to share their knowledge and skills, such as they are, in the wonderful oak building that is Andy MacLaughlin’s workshop, in the equally wonderful grounds of Mill House, his home in Ebberston. Between us we had a look at hollowing, bowl turning, spindle turning, and a little eccentric stuff. Many thanks to Geoff Walker for organising the day, despite being currently incapacitated due to a recent eye operation. I am sure we all wish him a speedy and successful recovery. Many thanks also to Andy and Linda for hosting the event, providing us with space, lathes, tea and coffee, a guided tour of the garden, and entertainment through Olive, their whippet who took a fancy to one of Jeff’s boots and ran off with it during our convivial lunch break.

Posted 11 August 2022. Darren Breeze from Lowestoft gave a demonstration on 4 August. He made a 12" diameter sycamore bowl, with texturing and colouring. A video is available on the video gallery page

We welcomed back Margaret Garrard for a demonstration at our club evening, on Thursday 3 November 2022, 7.00 - 9.30pm ("ish" - we actually finished at 10pm). Margaret has visited us a number of times before, the last occasion being in July 2019, when she turned a pot decorated with crackle glaze. Read a little more about her in the gallery of previous demonstrators.
This time she made a small square sided pot using the technique of "therming". This involved a home-made jig and turning four pots at a time. It is a technique that can be used for batch turning multiple copies of items such as stair spindles. On the night she just turned one side to show how it is done, before hollowing out and adding a stopper. A video of the demonstration is now available on Youtube. The previous weekend we held an exhibition and sale at The Hill Institute in Thornton le Dale. It proved to be our best ever sale, with over £2000 raised. Most of this went to the 18 club members who put pieces up for sale, but a percentage went to help club funds after payment of rent and expenses. These club sales have proved to be a major factor in maintaining the financial viability of the Club. Photographs from the sale are available on the website.

Posted 31 December 2022. Castle Howard asked if we were interested in some rhododendron tree trunks. We picked up four trailer loads of this wonderful looking timber, in anticipation of turning it into something quite unique. More details and photos are available.
