Woodturning videos

A collection of woodturning videos made by members or demonstrators. The club has many more on DVD, but will not be sharing them without permission from the demonstrators involved. 7 December 2023 A 25 minute video reviewing the activities of Ryedale Woodturners during 2023. Members' turning gallery items, demonstration photos, sales, exhibitions, shows - it's all here.

2 November 2023 Philip Greenwood demonstrated turning an emerging bowl, and making and using an eccentric chuck, as well as talking about the skew chisel, its variations and its use. A write-up with pictures is also available.

5 October 2023 Steve Fearnley demonstrated a recent project to make a Christmas ornament collection, including tree baubles using an Axminster pen-type kit, an angel, and a choir group with choristers, conductor, music stand and street lamp. A write-up with pictures is also available.

6 July 2023 Mick Hanbury visited us again from Lincolnshire. He turned a shield from sycamore, then textured it and coloured it. A write-up with pictures is also available.

1 June 2023 Club member Martyn Weller demonstrated "three challenging bowls" for us, in an excellent presentation of ambitious turning to produce items beyond the norm. He concentrated on showing us the techniques, rather than producing finished articles. A write-up with pictures is available on the website.

4 May 2023 Dennis Wake visited us again from Hartlepool. He offered us three small projects - a hinged trinket box, a post-box money box (based on a Tony Wilson design), and an apple. This video only covers the hinged trinket box project, as the other two were incomplete. Some details of the other projects are on the Event reports page.

6 April 2023 Emma Cook visited us again after 3 years and gave an information packed demonstration, making a banded bowl coloured with chameleon flakes, and a small centrifuge decorated platter.

JohnWhiteley turning difficult wood demonstration

2 March 2023 Our chairman John Whiteley gave a masterclass on handling difficult timber - green, mis-shapen, spalted, knotted, et cetera.

2 February 2023 Colwin Way gave an IRD from his workshop in Dorset. He was looking at processing green timber, and offers lots of advice alongside turning a piece of green oak to a finish, ready to move, and completing a rough turned piece of ash he had in store for 6 months.

8 December 2022 A 25 minute video reflecting on the activities of Ryedale Woodturners during 2022.

3 November 2022 Margaret Garrard made a welcome return after a 3-year absence. She demonstrated the technique of therming, to make a "square" pot.

6 October 2022 Club secretary and treasurer Steve Fearnley presented a demonstration of how to turn logs and offcuts into saleable items. Light pulls, apples and pears, mice, snowmen, grass pots and more.

There are a number of videos available from the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain (AWGB), which we belong to as a club. There are a number of workshop tours of members, some instructional videos, and a list of 10 educational turning videos by major turners including Jimmy Clewes, Ray Key and Richard Raffan.

if you are on Instagram, there is an excellent woodturner based in Dundee, Jack Anderson, who regularly posts time lapse clips of him turning, usually burrs into bowls. Very simple video, short, and effective. He is also a carver - have a look at his skulls and space helmets. Richard Findley also posts on Instagram more or less daily video clips updating on his very varied turning and woodworking production

Chestnut Products have been hosting online demos, free, for a few months. In January 2021 there was a Question and Answer session with Emma Cooke, Richard Findley and our very own Dave Lowe.
