Martyn Weller showed us some of the jigs and accessories that he uses to help with his turning. He then went on to show how to make a "board bowl".

I only have photos from the second half of the demonstration, having spent the first half trying to sort out the sound for Zoom watchers (and failing).

Accessories

Lathe tool rack

Martyn had made a tool rack which fits on the end of his lathe, allowing the tools and accessories needed to be near at hand. A simple construction with spare timber.

Centre steady

Another home made item is a centre steady, made from ply and fitted with three wheels, the type normally found on roller blades or skateboards. It is used to steady the centre of a long thin spindle to prevent whipping in the centre.

A Trend Airshield Pro respirator helmet. Martyn wears this most of the time in his workshop - you have to protect yourself aganst dust. It can be a little heavy worn for long periods.

Segmenting jig

A jig for holding pieces to glue together a board. Wood and toggle clamp.

A simple template for marking out different angles.

Board bowl

Board bowl first sliec

A board was created using two contrasting timbers, cut in waves and glued together. This was then mounted on a srifical chuck using hot melt glue. It is important to only put the glue around the edges of the chuck, not across the face, as this would result in only a couple of small areas of contact.

Angle guide

The disc was cut into at an angle using a parting chisel. Quite hard work, with a few catches tripping out the lathe, but eventually it got through. This created a ring and a smaller disc, which were then glued together.

Segmented layers

The process is repeated and the layers build up to make a bowl blank. Each layer is positioned and glued together.

Board bowl

With layers glued up, the bowl can then be turned to shape like a normal bowl blank, though the width of the bowl walls is determined by the ovelap joints between the layers. Martyn finished the bowl later and provided photos - below.
