I had very few offcuts but I was determined to make something from them. So I made a dovecote.

The following year I purchased a large quantity of oak for various projects which I will not go into here, but one of the things I made was an improved oak dovecote. Anyway as we already had one in the garden, my wife suggested that I "got rid of it on eBay"

Shortly after listing the item, I had an email asking me to make a larger version. I emailed the chap back saying "sorry mate I don't make dovecotes for a living". He replied, "you might like to make this one, if I tell you it's for Her Majesty the Queen". Understandably, I was flattered and I agreed to make the dovecote which now resides at Sandringham between the Royal Stud and a beautiful walled garden. It turns out that I was being commissioned by the Royal Pigeon Racing Association (of which she is Patron) to make their gift for the Queen's 80th birthday. I had the privileged to attend its unveiling and later received a letter of thanks.

When I was making the Royal dovecote, I also made plenty of spare parts, just in case something went wrong. Anyway, 14 years later in lockdown, I dusted off the parts and started an identical one. Guess what, the wife has already told me to "sell it on eBay". Does anyone know of someone wanting to buy a dovecote. It's made of 625 pieces of oak and there is only 1 other like it.

Steve Fearnley. As the trophy I posted on 7 May is in memory of a show vegetable grower, I thought it would be nice to fill it with some veg. All from offcuts. Spalted beech, larch, oak, padauk, purple heart, box, ash and laburnum. Leather leaves.

Lance Garrard A cyclone attachment to filter air and save on bags. Basically you plug your vacuum hose into the top hole and the machine hose into the hole on the side. Dust is then centrifuged to the bottom of the funnel, leaving clean air to go into your shop vac. They are really effective and you can buy plastic cyclones on ebay for around £15, then screw it to a suitable container. – see the 3rd picture. Or you can make your own – pictures 1 and 2

Steve Fearnley When I did the finials demonstration back in January, I used a home made screw chuck. I kept getting vibration, so invested in a 75mm SCT screwchuck from Chronos at £24.95. Much smoother rotation. Also has the option to use as a faceplate and screw in 4 screws for extra grip. I use Kreg self-tapping with a square drive head.
