I don't often get to Saturday demonstrations, but I managed this one by Sue. I had to miss the Royal Wedding to get there, but some how I managed to cope. I didn't take as many pictures, nor as much detail, as I would with a club demonstration, but here are a few points from the day.
Vase within a vase
Sue started with a vase, which once turned was then sliced evenly down to a second vase shape in the centre.
The vase was turned as standard, though Sue was using a spindle gouge that was "in training" (a new grind on a new tool, because she had left hers at home!), and this caused her a little uncertainty due to a lack of familiarilty.
The inner shape was formed with a standard parting tool. Normally Sue would achieve the even spacing by using a beading tool to mark the bands, but she left that at home as well. It was important to her that the inner shape was not stepped, so to refine it and make a curve, she used two very thin parting tools, one ground at an angle to the right, the other to the left. Attention to small details is always important.
Decorated hollow form
Sue's second demonstration piece was a hollow form, decorated with pyrography and iridescent paint.
She hollowed out a form from a piece of sycamore, using firstly a BCT ring tool, and secondly an RP2000. Her conclusion was that both were effective, but the BCT produced a finer cut.
She created a small step on the rim, using a Proxxon with a cutting wheel. This just gives the piece a little extra interest.
She then taped up the surface using low tack masking tape, creating triangles all over the form.
Each triangle was then pyrographed with different designs, using a couple of different pyrograph nibs on the Peter Child kit.
This was a slow process, not really a spectator sport, so Sue left most of the form unfinished, and moved on to using the Jo Sonja iridescent paint. This works with the dark pyrography marks, highlighting them with a bright glow.
Sue finished with an executive bottle stopper using a neat screw-thread stainless steel kit.
